Gladiathers in art and history. Female athletes have been used in advertising for over 100 years. Β In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries ad agencies like Allen & Ginter used “Sporting Girls”, or images of woman engaging in sports, in various lucrative campaigns. Β The Metropolitan Museum of Art is currently featuring some of those images that were found in the collection of Jefferson R. Burdick. Β If you’re in the New York City area, check it out! Β
