Gladiathers in art and history. Female athletes have been used in advertising for over 100 years.  In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries ad agencies like Allen & Ginter used “Sporting Girls”, or images of woman engaging in sports, in various lucrative campaigns.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art is currently featuring some of those images that were found in the collection of Jefferson R.
