National Women’s Soccer League Heads to Angel City

The National Women’s Soccer League announced last week an expansion team will be coming to Los Angeles. As if bringing professional women soccer to Los Angeles isn’t exciting enough, the roster of women among the ownership group is impressive!

The list includes Natalie Portman, Kara Nortman, Julie Uhrman, Uzo Aduba, Jessica Chastain, America Ferrera, Jennifer Garner, Eva Longoria, Serena Williams and two-year-old Olympia Williams-Ohanian. The ownership group also features 12 former U.S. national team soccer players — Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Rachel Buehler, Shannon Boxx, Amanda Cromwell, Lorrie Fair Allen, Ronnie Fair Sullins, Joy Fawcett, Angela Hucles, Shannon MacMillan, Tisha Venturini Hoch, and Saskia Webber, Lauren Cheney Holiday and Abby Wambach.

Can you say for women, by women?! With hopes to reshape the expectations of soccer on and off the field, they are already off to a great start. Together the ownership group will aim to build a winning team on and off the field with plans to develop a passionately loyal fan base. They also hope to make an impact on the community through committing to extending access to sports for young people in Los Angeles. Sports has the power to bridge gaps and bring people together and this is just one of the goals of the new NWSL team. Another goal of club owners will be to continue the fight for equal pay for women after last summers Women’s World Cup controversy.

With the addition of this new team the NWSL will increase the amount of teams to a total of 11. The club will be called “Angel City” until it develops an official team name, logo and venue location. The team is expected to begin play in 2022 but until then we have a lot to look forward for as this is just the beginning. Being the only team in the NWSL to be owned almost entirely by women this will be another great opportunity for women in sport.
